๐Ÿงญ Career Compass 14

๐ŸŽ‰ a birthday gift, not a counselling brochure

You do not have to choose
your whole life at 14.

After Class 10, a few good roads open up. This is a map of what each one asks for and what it gives back.

There is no "best" road here.
Each one suits a different person. The tabs below lay out the same information for each, so you can compare them side by side.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ The three roads

Every road has its own tab covering the same six things: what it is, the stream you need, entrance exams, the courses and options, what it teaches, and its advantages and trade-offs.

๐ŸŽ’ What every road needs

These three apply whichever road you take.

๐Ÿ’ช

Capability

What your field demands, plus communication and judgement โ€” which every field demands.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Evidence

Projects, results, failures, internships, real experience. Things you did, not only things you scored.

๐Ÿ”“

Optionality

A credible degree and enough academic preparation to keep the other doors open a while longer.

๐Ÿš€ IT + Entrepreneurship

Technology, business and entrepreneurship โ€” usually through an online degree, with room to build, sell and experiment alongside study.

Where this road can lead

These are examples, not a fixed list. The common thread is a set of abilities that transfers across many businesses.

๐Ÿ’ช Advantages

  • Autonomy: high if a business works โ€” you decide what to build and whom to work with.
  • Capital needed: can start very low for software.
  • Time to first real experience: immediate โ€” a student can ship a product and speak to customers now.
  • Job backup: software, analytics, product, digital business and consulting roles, if fundamentals are strong.
  • Study alongside: several programmes are designed to support parallel study, subject to the rules of both institutions. Recheck both programmes before enrolling simultaneously.

โš–๏ธ Trade-offs

  • Building something is not the same as building something people want โ€” distribution and customer understanding are harder than coding.
  • Outcomes are high-variance: many ventures do not work.
  • Online degrees have no campus life, and peer group depends on the cohort.
  • These programmes are newer, so alumni track records are still short.
  • Do not expect the same placement ecosystem as a strong on-campus college. Individual online programmes may still provide career services, employer connections or placement assistance.

๐Ÿ“š Stream & entrance preparation

Class 11โ€“12 stream

For this particular founder/technology path, Mathematics is strongly recommended because it strengthens computing, AI, analytics, finance and problem-solving. It is not necessarily an admission requirement for every programme. Always check the exact rules in the application year.

  • PCM โ†’ if conventional engineering/JEE should remain seriously open.
  • Commerce + Maths โ†’ if business, economics and accounting exposure is more useful.
  • PCB โ†’ medicine.
  • PCMB โ†’ only if there is a genuine reason to preserve both medicine and engineering despite the heavier workload.

Entrance routes for each option

Entrance patterns change between admission cycles. Confirm on each programme's official page in your application year.

๐Ÿงญ Find your centre of gravityBusiness / founder depth โ†โ†’ Technical depth
01

IIM Bangalore DBE

Business-first. Best when customer, market and founder judgement are the core capability to build.

02

IIT Jodhpur

The middle ground: technology + management for a hybrid operator.

03

IIT Madras

Business-data orientation for someone who likes evidence, analytics and systems.

04

IIT Guwahati

AI/data-heavy. Best when artificial intelligence and data are the capability you want to deepen.

๐Ÿ”ญ Each one develops a different centre of gravity.None is inherently superior. What important capability are you least likely to learn deeply on your own?
๐Ÿซ Optional offline companion degrees

An online founder/technology degree does not automatically need a second degree beside it. If campus life, local peer groups or another academic backup are valuable, an offline degree can be added โ€” but only if it does not crowd out building, selling and experimenting.

Examples: B.Com, BBA, BA Economics, B.Com with taxation/accounting specialisation, or B.Com (TPP) + CMA as one possible example.

Two degrees are not automatically better than one. If the second qualification removes the time needed to build, sell, experiment, meet people and think deeply, it may reduce rather than increase your education.

One possible pairing: B.Com (TPP) and CMA

Where the offline degree is a B.Com, one available specialisation is B.Com in Tax Procedure and Practice (TPP) โ€” offered by Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari, and by Mangalore University, Karnatak University and others.

What B.Com (TPP) covers beyond a general B.Com

Alongside the standard B.Com core of financial accounting, business organisation and management, corporate accounting and business law.

Adding CMA

CMA India is awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) in three stages: Foundation, Intermediate and Final.

  • CMA Foundation can be registered for after Class 12, in any stream. Provisional registration is possible while still in Class 12, though Class 12 must be cleared before sitting the examination.
  • A graduate โ€” including a B.Com graduate โ€” may enter CMA Intermediate directly, without the Foundation examination.
  • Some colleges run B.Com programmes with integrated CMA coaching; the branding varies by college, so the syllabus is what to compare.

The resulting combination

๐Ÿซ

Offline B.Com (TPP)

Campus and peer group, plus income tax, GST and auditing.

๐Ÿ’ป

Online degree

An IIM or IIT credential in technology, data or digital business.

๐Ÿงฎ

CMA

Costing, management accounting and financial control.

This is three commitments running at once. It is one available combination, not a recommended default.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ A good business does not need to become a unicorn

Entrepreneurship is not only venture capital, unicorns and headline-grabbing startups. A small, profitable, well-run business can provide autonomy, interesting work, financial comfort and time.

๐ŸขVertical SaaSOne useful product for one specific industry.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธNiche agency โ†’ productLearn a problem by serving it, then package the repeatable part.
๐ŸงฉSmall software portfolioSeveral focused products rather than one giant bet.
๐Ÿ”งAcquire + improveMake an existing small business work better with technology.
๐ŸชTech-enabled traditional businessUse software to improve a real-world operation.
๐Ÿš€Larger venture-backed startupOne path โ€” not the definition of entrepreneurship.

โš–๏ธ Comparing the options

๐Ÿค” Questions to compare them with

  1. Which programme teaches what I cannot easily learn alone?
  2. Which leaves enough bandwidth to build real things?
  3. Which gives me the strongest backup if my ventures fail?
  4. Which peer group will challenge me?
  5. What did students actually build in the previous two years?
  6. Are the exams and workload compatible with real-world projects?

๐Ÿงฉ What this path teaches

No degree on this road covers the whole set. Open a competency to see what to learn, practise and prove in the real world.

Quick foundation Ongoing Deep craft

โš™๏ธ Engineering

B.Tech / B.E. โ€” usually a four-year full-time/on-campus technical degree entered through competitive entrance examinations.

Engineering suits students who want deep technical training, campus peers, laboratories, competitions and a structured route into technology companies.

๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ Typical timeline

Class 11โ€“12PCM with entrance preparation
EntranceJEE Main, JEE Advanced, state and private entrances
DegreeUsually 4 years
ThenJob, startup, higher studies, research, MBA or other routes

๐Ÿ“š Stream & entrance preparation

Class 11โ€“12 stream

PCM โ€” Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. PCMB also keeps this road open while retaining medicine, at the cost of a considerably higher academic load.

Entrance examinations

Official syllabus: JEE Main ยท JEE Advanced

๐Ÿ’ช Advantages

  • Strong peer network at good campuses
  • Structured technical depth
  • Internships and campus placements
  • Laboratories and research opportunities
  • Widely recognised credential

โš–๏ธ Trade-offs

  • Four fairly structured years
  • Entrance preparation can occupy much of Class 11โ€“12
  • Curriculum can move slower than industry in fast-changing areas
  • Quality and peer group vary widely between colleges
  • Coursework alone may not produce evidence of shipping real products

The job market, accurately

There is not one engineering job market. Outcomes depend on institution, branch, genuine technical ability, internships, communication and the economic cycle. The credential alone is increasingly insufficient for the strongest software roles, while capable students continue to have good opportunities.

Autonomy: usually lower than entrepreneurship early on, as employer, location and role constrain choices; it can become high later through remote work, consulting, senior technical roles or starting a company.

๐Ÿงฉ What this path teaches

A rigorous programme typically develops:

This foundation stays relevant where architecture, failure modes, security and trade-offs need to be understood.

โœ… A reason to choose it

"I genuinely want deep technology and I would enjoy spending four years around people who also love building and understanding technical systems."

๐Ÿšซ A weak reason

"Good students are supposed to do engineering."

๐Ÿฉบ Medicine

MBBS โ€” a licensed profession entered through NEET-UG, with a long structured training pathway.

Medicine differs from the other two roads in kind: it is a licensed profession carrying responsibility for human life. It suits students drawn to the work itself โ€” patients, biology, diagnosis, procedures, uncertainty and service.

๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ Current route in India

Class 11โ€“12Physics, Chemistry and Biology with NEET preparation
EntranceNEET-UG, the national undergraduate medical entrance
MBBSAbout 4.5 years plus a compulsory rotating internship โ€” roughly 5.5 years
PGMD/MS typically 3 further years, commonly pursued for specialisation

A common specialist timeline: Class 12 โ†’ about 5.5 years of MBBS and internship โ†’ PG entrance โ†’ about 3 years of MD/MS โ†’ optional super-speciality or fellowship. Specialist independence can therefore fall in the late 20s.

๐Ÿ“š Stream & entrance preparation

Class 11โ€“12 stream

PCB โ€” Physics, Chemistry and Biology. PCMB keeps engineering entrances open alongside medicine, at a considerably higher academic load.

Entrance examination

Official: NEET-UG ยท NMC regulations

๐Ÿ’ช Advantages

  • Direct and meaningful human impact
  • Strong professional identity
  • Intellectual depth
  • Long-term demand for excellent clinicians
  • Multiple niches: clinical care, academics, research, administration, health-tech
  • Scope for private practice and eventual autonomy

โš–๏ธ Trade-offs

  • Long training pathway
  • Competitive bottlenecks at both UG and PG stages
  • Large syllabus and repeated examinations
  • Physical presence is fundamental; little remote flexibility
  • Nights and emergencies are common in many specialties
  • Greater legal and ethical responsibility than most careers

The job market, accurately

Medicine's challenge is usually not whether work exists, but obtaining the desired specialty, institution, location, work-life balance and income trajectory. An MBBS graduate holds a professional qualification; many pursue postgraduate training because practice and progression increasingly reward specialisation.

Autonomy: low during training years, when attendance, postings, hierarchy, examinations and patient duties dictate the schedule; potentially very high as an established specialist or private practitioner, though still tied to patients, regulation and location.

Note on regulations: licensing and postgraduate entrance mechanisms have been under revision, including regulations around NExT. Do not assume today's system will apply in your graduation year โ€” check NMC rules at the time.

๐Ÿงฉ What this path teaches

A medical education develops:

It is much more than memorisation, though the factual workload is large.

โœ… A reason to choose it

"Even after understanding the long road, I would still enjoy spending my day diagnosing, treating and talking to patients."

๐Ÿšซ A weak reason

"Doctors are respected and I am good at biology."

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Plan

Ways to test the roads before choosing, and one illustration of how a decade could be spent.

Career experiments collect evidence about yourself that an aptitude test cannot.

โœ… Checklist

Saved on this device only โ€” nothing is sent anywhere.

๐Ÿ“œ When a side certification is worth taking

Take one when at least one of these is true:

  1. It gives a structured foundation you genuinely lack.
  2. The instructor or material is unusually good.
  3. The credential itself unlocks something useful.
  4. You apply it immediately to a real project.

One illustration of ages 14 to 24. Not compulsory โ€” yours may look completely different.

๐Ÿ“Š The three roads compared

Each row means something different depending on the person โ€” this is for comparison, not for scoring.

๐Ÿ† A scoreboard beyond certificates

Things worth tracking, whichever road you take:

At 14, nobody needs you to know what you'll be at 24.

What you already have is more useful: curiosity, the ability to make things, and enough time to try many directions.

Use the next decade to become difficult to replace โ€” not because you know one framework, but because you can understand a problem, learn whatever's necessary, build a solution, explain it, sell it, improve it, and treat people well.

Study seriously. Get a worthwhile degree. But don't confuse education with classrooms, or a career with a job title.

Build things. Meet interesting people. Read widely. Learn how money works. Learn how technology works. Learn how people think. Help customers. Make mistakes while they're still cheap. Change your mind when evidence changes.

Once a year, ask five questions

  1. What did I learn this year?
  2. What did I build or make?
  3. What did I sell, publish, test or put in front of real people?
  4. What did I enjoy enough to want more of?
  5. What do I want to try next?

Optional sixth: What belief about my future changed because of evidence?

๐ŸŽ‚ And remember: this page is a map drawn for your 14th birthday โ€” not a contract with your future self.
